Thanks Mark, that was a lovely read. It is the sort of thing we plan to do somewhere: Thailand, Malaysia, or Vietnam for a few months. We'd also do it to avoid a winter, and although our southern Australian winters are not as torrid as London's, they can still get you down.

Two caveats: (1) visas will limit your time in some countries, especially Vietnam, which is only issuing a 30-day visa right now. Thailand is more generous, currently 45 days with the option to extend by 30 days for 1,900 baht; (2) there's a huge variance in weather and air quality throughout the year. Vietnam has three distinct climate zones. Thailand is not at its absolute best in your winter months, but a whole lot better than March and April, which I'd avoid. Anyway, I'm sure you'll do your own research.
